Maybank Cheque Guide: Writing, Cheque Books, Clearing and Charges
Quick answer
Writing a Maybank cheque correctly
- Date: write the date at the top right. The cheque is payable from this date and stays valid for six months.
- Payee: write the person's or company's full name exactly as their bank account holds it. Draw a line through leftover space.
- Amount in words: on the "Ringgit Malaysia" line, write the amount in words including sen if any (e.g. "Two Thousand Five Hundred And Sen Fifty Only"), starting at the left edge, ending with "Only", and striking through the remaining space.
- Amount in figures: in the RM box, write the figures close to the symbol and close with a dash (e.g. RM2,500.50).
- Crossing: two parallel lines at the top left with "A/C Payee Only" between them means the money can only go into the named payee's account. Most Maybank leaves come pre-crossed; add it if yours does not and the payment should not be cash.
- Sign exactly as your specimen signature registered with Maybank. For company accounts, follow the registered mandate (single or joint signatories, company stamp if required).
- No alterations. Malaysia's image-based clearing rejects cheques with visible corrections. A mistake means cancelling that leaf and writing a fresh one.
Requesting a Maybank cheque book
New books are issued to current account holders. Channels: any Maybank branch (requisition slip from your current book or the counter form), and digital request via Maybank2u for eligible accounts. Collection or delivery follows the bank's standard process, typically within about a week.
Charges to expect: RM 0.15 stamp duty per cheque leaf (RM 7.50 on a 50-leaf book) as required under Malaysian stamp duty rules, plus any book charge per Maybank's current fee schedule.
Maybank cheque clearing time
Malaysia clears cheques through eSPICK, the national cheque image clearing system: the physical cheque stops at the collecting bank and only its image travels. A Maybank cheque deposited before the branch or machine cut-off is normally presented the same business day and the funds are available the next business day; deposits after cut-off shift one day. Weekends and public holidays pause the cycle.
If a cheque is returned (insufficient funds, signature differs, post-dated presented early, technical image issues), return charges apply per Maybank's fee schedule, and repeated dishonours can affect the account's standing.
Printing on Maybank cheques for business payments
Businesses running payments from a Maybank current account burn through leaves monthly, and every handwritten field is a chance for a return: words-figures mismatches, payee misspellings, illegible writing failing image clearing. ChequePro includes a Maybank cheque template that prints payee, amounts, date and crossing precisely onto Maybank leaves through a normal office printer, generates the ringgit-and-sen words automatically, and logs every cheque in the register.
